Cabinet Approves Four Semiconductor Projects, Rs 4600 Crore Budgeted

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet has approved four semiconductor fabrication and display fabrication projects, budgeted at a collective Rs 4,600 crore (approximately $565 million).

The projects are expected to create over 2,000 jobs and are part of the Indian government's attempts to improve domestic electronics manufacturing. The semiconductors sector in India is currently entirely import-dependent.

The four projects are:

1. A semiconductor fabrication and assembly facility in the state of Tamil Nadu by Singapore's Silterra Technologies, with a budget of Rs 3,869 crore ($504.7 million).

2. A display fabrication facility in the state of Maharashtra by Chinese maker BOE Technology, with a budget of Rs 2,894 crore ($396.77 million).

3. A semiconductor facility in the state of Telangana by India's Dixon Technologies with a budget of Rs 296 crore ($40.05 million).

4. A semiconductor assembly and test unit in the state of Gujarat by Korean electronics maker Samsung, with a budget of Rs 247 crore ($33.6 million).

The approval of the projects came months after India unveiled plans to invest $10 billion to encourage semiconductor manufacturing and attract investments from global chipmakers.

"These projects will help India establish itself as an important player in the global value chain of semiconductor manufacturing," according to a statement released after the Cabinet meeting.

The approved facilities are expected to begin production between 2022 and 2025, according to the government.

Quoted Person:

"This is a significant step towards achieving the goal of making India a hub for electronics manufacturing with focus on semiconductor and display fabrication. This will pave the way for establishments of more such facilities in the country and thereby facilitate India's integration into the global value chain."

- Ashwini Vaishnaw, Electronics and Information Technology Minister, in a statement after the cabinet meeting approving the projects.
