An emotional tug-of-war between celebration and mourning as the nation celebrates Republic Day; 11 devotees returning from the Khatu Shyam temple in Rajasthan were killed in a horrific road accident.
The accident took place at around 5 a.m. on Friday, January 27, on the Jaipur-Ahmedabad highway, when the driver of their vehicle lost control over the truck, resulting in it tumbling several times. The passengers were reportedly heading back to Jaipur after celebrating the inaugural function of the newly constructed hall (mandapa) of the Khatu Shyam temple.
This tragic accident becomes even more heart-wrenching as it took place on the eve of India's 72nd Republic Day, where road and other safety awareness programs were underway.
A total of 52 people were traveling in the truck, and over 30 of them have been injured, with several immediately referred to a hospital in Jaipur. The injured passengers were promptly rushed to the Sirohi district hospital for preliminary treatment. For critical cases, emergency air evacuations were arranged, alleges the District Collector, Sirohi. The Rajasthan government has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the deceased's families, while the injured will be given Rs 50,000.
This unfortunate incident serves as a grim reminder for road safety awareness and responsible driving behavior, especially during this festive season when many embark on pilgrimages to various religious sites across the nation.
