Heavy rainfall alerts issued for two Kerala districts

Heavy rainfall, triggering severe floods, has led to the government issuing an orange alert for two districts in Kerala, with officials advising residents to evacuate to higher ground.

In the district of Idukki, which borders Tamil Nadu, heavy rainfall started on Sunday and showed no signs of letting up two days later. As a result, the area was recently added to the list of regions covered by India's National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

Rescue teams, comprising members of the NDRF and the State Disaster Response Force, were dispatched to help stranded individuals evacuate. Local media outlets have also reported that rescue efforts were underway to assist animals trapped in the area.

According to local reports, the main destination for evacuees is relief camps set up in nearby schools, where they can find shelter, food, and other essentials. But the sheer volume of displaced individuals poses a challenge for authorities.

The situation has also been complicated by damage to roads and bridges, which makes it difficult for rescue teams to reach some of the hardest-hit areas.

"It is for the first time in the history of Kerala that we have issued an orange alert," an official from the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) told the media. "We have called for voluntary evacuation among people living in low-lying areas and those living close to rivers and dams."

KSDMA has also pointed out that the heavy rainfall, believed to be caused by the south-west monsoon, is unusual for this time of year, making it harder to predict.

"We are in the middle of a fierce battle with nature," said another official from KSDMA, adding that "the situation is unprecedented."

All things considered, officials are doing their best to keep residents safe, and preparations are being made to provide food, clothing, and other essentials to those affected by the floods.

All residents of the state are advised to stay vigilant and keep an eye on weather updates and official announcements as this story develops.
