The Online Gaming Bill, which seeks to address concerns around gambling and betting through heavy penalties, has been cleared by the Union Cabinet, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The bill, once introduced and passed in the Lok Sabha, the country's legislature, will amend the existing laws, which are largely outdated and do not account for the huge rise in online gaming recently. It is intended to help regulate the sector and assist in curbing addiction and related issues.
According to reports, the bill will be taken up shortly, with officials stating that it is a priority. It will be introduced as a substitute to a similar bill introduced in the last Parliament session, which did not proceed further due to the general elections.
While the bill's goal is to promote self-regulation amongst online gaming companies, it also aims to provide a boost to the income of the state.
Given the booming popularity of online gaming, it is high time that the archaic laws were updated to address this largely unregulated sector.
