Himachal Pradesh's Chamba district was struck by multiple earthquakes over the last 24 hours, with witnesses saying they felt two quakes in rapid succession today.
At around 1:20 pm Wednesday, locals reported feeling the ground shake in the region, which lies on a Tectonic Plate Boundary. A 3.3-magnitude earthquake was reported shortly afterward, followed by a second, more powerful quake registered at 4.0 magnitude.
This cluster of activity comes just one day after a medium-strength earthquake hit the same area. That incident, measured at 5.4 magnitude, triggered panic among locals, with many rushing outdoors amid fears of potential building collapses or other damage.
According to the Regional Meteorology Office, since the beginning of the year, Quakes have been felt in the region on eight occasions.
Despite the frequency of recent earthquakes, officials say there has been no significant damage to local infrastructure.
Researcher Akhil Srivastava comments, "The Himalayas are prone to seismic activity, but these dual earthquakes are a reminder to prepare for any eventuality."
As tectonic plates shift and reshape the region's landscape, residents of Himachal Pradesh will continue to be susceptible to earthquakes. Officials say the state experienced a cluster of eight earthquakes of varying magnitudes in the first half of 2023.
Let's hope it doesn't get worse before it gets better.
