India dismissed Nepal's concerns over India-China border trade through Lipulekh Pass, calling its smaller neighbor's territorial claims "untenable." Nepal recently lodged a strong protest against India's inauguration of the link road through Lipulekh Pass, a disputed territory according to the Nepal government. However, India claimed that the road was within its territory and urged Nepal to abide by the 1816 Sugauli Treaty.
The Nepalese government stated that the treaty delineated their shared borders and that India's road construction activity in Lipulekh, a territory on the Nepalese side of the border, violates the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity. India's Ministry of External Affairs responded by saying that Nepal's concerns are "unjustified, untenable, and unacceptable."
India urged Nepal to accept the long-standing boundary agreements between the two countries and to resolve any emerging border issues through mutual discussions and negotiations. Nepal's outrage comes shortly after India opened a new bridge between India and Nepal, which Nepal welcomed and praised as a positive step towards improving Indian-Nepalese relations.
The bridge, named Kamala Setu, allows pilgrims visiting the Pashupatinath Temple in Nepal easier access to the site. India further expressed its willingness to strengthen cooperation with Nepal to facilitate the movement of pilgrims and locals between the two countries.
India's rejection of Nepal's objection underscores the ongoing territorial disputes between the two countries and highlights the need for effective communication and negotiation to resolve these issues.
