Smuggling is on the rise at Lucknow's Chaudhary Charan Singh International Airport. This time, authorities seized hydroponic weed worth a staggering Rs 24 crore from two passengers who had landed from Bangkok on an Air India flight on August 26. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) pulled off an incredible operation based on specific intelligence. The two passengers, who had checked in their baggage, were intercepted and during questioning, they admitted to carrying a huge quantity of hydroponic weed, or ganja, in their luggage. Authorities found a total of 23.935 kilograms of the drug, which was seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. The passengers were arrested on Wednesday and sent to judicial custody.
This incident is a stark reminder of the growing problem of drug trafficking through airports. Authorities must enhance security measures to avoid such incidents. Additionally, stricter checks on passengers arriving from places known for drug activities could help curb this problem.
The seizure of such a substantial amount of drugs suggests that the trade in narcotics is increasingly becoming more sophisticated, with travellers opting for newer methods to smuggle substances. The success of this operation highlights the effectiveness of proactive intelligence operations in combating drug trafficking.
The issue of drug trafficking is a serious concern that requires coordinated efforts from various law enforcement agencies. With the increasing prevalence of drug smuggling through airports, it is imperative to deploy the latest available technology at checkpoints to detect contraband more effectively and efficiently.
