UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) Recap and Looking Forward

During the recent UN Climate Change Conference (COP23) in Bonn, Germany, many crucial events took place. The conference occurred from November 6th to November 17th, 2017, with the goal of establishing a roadmap for nations to adhere to the goals set forth in the 2015 Paris Climate Accords, particularly those involving the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions necessary to avert the worst impacts of climate change.

One of the significant achievements of COP23 was the unanimous agreement by negotiators to create a system for how countries will document their progress towards the goals set forth in the Paris Agreement. This system is referred to as the transparency framework and will provide guidance for nations to provide information on their climate actions and progress, enhancing trust and inspire confidence among countries. This is a crucial step towards scaling up climate action and ensuring countries live up to their commitments.

Another significant outcome from COP23 involved finalizing the rules for an international market for carbon dioxide emissions, something called Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. These rules, such as they are, were completed, providing a framework for buyers and sellers of emissions reductions to conduct transactions in a transparent, accountable, and sustainable way. This is a significant move towards achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement.

These developments give us reason for hope, but the work is far from over according to COP23 President and Prime Minister of Fiji, Frank Bainimarama, who said, "We cannot afford to fail in this challenge of climate change. Future generations will judge us harshly if we do not take this opportunity to protect our Earth."

The progress and urgency expressed at COP23 amidst news of increasingly devastating climate impacts underscore the importance of continuing to pressure governments and policymakers to take ambitious action to mitigate and adapt to climate change. The road to success in these efforts remains long, but the process in Bonn was a step in the right direction.
