Step Up In Narcotics Vigil Ahead of Onam in Kozhikode

Kozhikode, a popular tourist destination in Kerala, is preparing for its annual Onam festivities. But the local police are on high alert to crack down on narcotics trafficking.

Antinarcotics squads from the Kozhikode City and Rural police are closely monitoring the district to keep a close eye on drug peddlers, particularly around youth gatherings and public festivities.

The District Anti-Narcotics Special Action Force (DANSAF) is leading the charge, targeting previous offenders in the region and those convicted in significant drug trafficking cases.

According to police sources, a group of plainclothesmen is assisting the squads in their efforts to prevent drug trafficking. They are on the lookout for repeat offenders who still have ties to inter-state gangs and want to get back into the game.

Female police officers are also involved in the heightened surveillance, and police inspectors are using surveillance cameras linked to the city police control room to aid in real-time monitoring.

In addition to the anti-narcotics squads, special squads from the Excise, Railway Protection Force, and Motor Vehicles departments are on high alert to ensure strict vigil at key public venues.

According to inspectors with the Anti-Narcotics Squad, coastal patrols will also be reinforced to prevent the use of fishing boats for drug trafficking in coastal regions of Kozhikode, Malappuram, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The patrols aim to collaborate with coastal vigilance committees comprising fishermen and local administrators to report and monitor any suspicious activity.

This effort led to the arrest of several migrant workers and foreign nationals who had gotten involved in drug peddling. Foreign nationals who had been arrested previously were caught after thorough investigations and visits to sensitive locations, revealed a sub-inspector who had investigated some of Kozhikode's major drug trafficking cases.

He added that many foreign nationals are under scrutiny for suspected drug deals and fund transfers with peddlers in Kerala and neighboring states.

With Onam just around the corner, let's hope the increased surveillance helps discourage drug trafficking in the area.
