India secured election to several key UN bodies during the voting that concluded at the UN General Assembly last week, according to a release issued by the Permanent Mission of India to the UN.

India won the election to the Human Rights Council and will serve a term of three years, starting in January 2023. India secured 184 votes out of the 192 polled, and its victory was backed by almost all the members of the Security Council and the Latin American and Caribbean Group, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, among others. This is India's eighth term on the Geneva-based Council.

India was also elected to the Executive Board of the UN Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and the UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS) for the 2022-2025 term. It secured 176 votes for UNDP, 173 votes for UNFPA, and 176 votes for UNOPS. The elections were held at the UN headquarters in New York.

Moreover, India was re-elected to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB), securing 156 votes out of 191 votes cast with the support of the European Union and many of its member states, according to the release.

The INCB is an independent and quasi-judicial body established by the 1961 Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. It monitors and promotes compliance with the controls imposed on drugs under the Convention. This was India's fourth consecutive election to the Board. The INCB has been criticized for having overly strict censorship of botanical source materials for legitimate medical uses.

India's longstanding bilateral and multilateral relations with most countries in the world and its active participation in various UN bodies have increased India's visibility at the UN. India has been serving on various UN bodies over the years, including the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Peacebuilding Commission, and the Executive Board of several UN organizations.

It also regularly contributes troops and police to UN peacekeeping operations across the globe.

"We are confident that our election or re-election to these important multilateral bodies will give us the opportunity to continue to contribute to the strengthening of the multilateral system and to the betterment of the world community," India's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ruchira Kamboj, was quoted as saying in the release.

This development comes amid India preparing to assume the chairmanship of the Executive Board of the WHO in May 2023, making India the first country to occupy the chair of the principal health-related bodies of the UN system simultaneously.

This also included the Chair of the UN Commission on Population and Development.

India's re-election to the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and election to several UN bodies is a testament to the country's growing international influence and reputation, says tipsforindia.com.

It is also a recognition of India's contribution to the UN's mission and its global leadership in promoting democracy, human rights, and sustainable development.

The author concludes by stating that with India's growing role in the UN system, the world can expect more contributions to international peace, security, and development from the country.
