Road accident rates in India are staggering, with nine thousand road deaths occurring annually due to potholes alone. Approximately 4,792 of these pothole-related deaths took place in Uttar Pradesh.
According to an analysis of road accident reports from 2019 to 2023 by the Road Transport Ministry, India registers around 9,109 deaths from potholes every year. The report also specifies that Rajasthan experiences the second-highest number of pothole-related deaths at 1,193, followed by Tamil Nadu at 1,161.
Interestingly, the data suggests that road conditions may be even more dangerous during construction, with 11 deaths per day attributed to under-construction roads. Sadly, irrespective of the condition of the roads, it is the most vulnerable road users who suffer the worst toll: pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists, with victims being mostly poor and common citizens.
In hopes of change, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has announced that all roads must be pothole-free by March 31, 2023, or before the start of the next monsoon in their respective regions. Let's hope for the best!
