After multiple setbacks and contractual disagreements, it looks like Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is finally ready to roll out the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force (IAF).
The Bangalore-based company has struggled to deliver the much-anticipated indigenous fighter jets, despite nearly 15 years since the first contract was signed. But now, according to multiple sources, HAL is on the cusp of delivering the first two Tejas Mk1A units, possibly in October 2022.
Despite delays in procuring key components, mainly engines, HAL is now ready to begin deliveries following the recent integration of the much-needed GE F404 engines. The IAF has ordered a total of 123 Tejas Mk1A units, and with the delivery of these two jets, the contract will be considered activated. This is a significant development for the Indian defense industry and a much-needed shot in the arm for the domestically-developed fighter program, which has faced several hurdles.
The delivery of these jets will be a critical milestone for HAL, and it remains to be seen when the remaining 121 orders will be fulfilled. With the IAF looking to bolster its depleting strength of fighter squadrons, it will be hoping for a seamless and quick delivery of the Tejas Mk1A jets by HAL.
Considering the national importance of this project, the country's defense ministry and HAL will be under intense scrutiny to deliver the remaining jets timely.
Hopefully, this announcement will be a positive step towards enhancing India's aviation prowess and military readiness, bolstering its defense capabilities and strengthening its regional and global defense partnerships.
