A groom who is serving a jail term for sexually abusing his bride-to-be before their arranged marriage pleaded to tie the knot with her inside the prison premises. And the prison authorities in Madhubani, Bihar, played cupid, organizing a full-blown marriage ceremony inside the jail with inmates acting as "baraatis" or wedding guests.
The madhubani Divisional Jail authorities decided to organize the marriage within its premises since the groom, Sagar Mallick, had asked for permission to marry the woman, whom he had sexually abused before their arranged marriage.
The bride, Dimple Kumari, arrived at the prison with her relatives and friends, where the ceremony was performed by a local priest. The inmates cheered as the bride and groom exchanged garlands and performed the rituals in traditional wedding attire. The police band also played at the ceremony.
A police official said that Mallick and Kumick, who have been in prison since March, were engaged to be married when the incident took place seven months ago.
The official added that after the ceremony, the couple cut a wedding cake and threw confetti, feeding each other pieces of the cake. The inmates then danced to the beat of a drum as the couple danced on the stage.
"We are very happy that we were able to organize the marriage of the two inside the jail premises," said the official.
At last, the bride and groom smiled and waved at the camera, posing for a wedding picture to remember.
