Title: WhatsApp Investment Scam Leaves Man in Hyderabad Ruined
Hyderabad- A young man from Borabanda was duped of nearly Rs.8 lakh via an online investment scam on WhatsApp.
The 28-year-old was added to a WhatsApp group, which falsely claimed association with a private bank's investment group. The fraudsters enticed him with promises of astronomical returns of 800% and even shared fake SEBI certificates and a fraudulent trading website to deceive him.
The victim, who had invested a total of Rs.7.60 lakh by August 23, 2025, was further manipulated by being shown inflated account balances of over Rs.45 lakh. The fraudsters then asked for additional deposits of Rs.9 lakh and a 25% commission before allowing withdrawal. When the victim refused and requested deduction from his balance, they blocked his access.
The man realized it was a scam and reported the fraud to the police, suffering a significant loss of Rs.7.60 lakh.
The police have issued warnings to the public to be vigilant against such online investment scams, operating via WhatsApp, Facebook, Telegram, and other fake trading websites. They advised citizens not to trust WhatsApp groups or unknown people offering guaranteed exorbitant returns.
The authorities stressed that banks and SEBI-registered companies never operate investment schemes over WhatsApp and urged investors to verify investment offers on the official SEBI and RBI websites.
They warned citizens not to transfer money to personal accounts or links shared by unknown persons and encouraged reporting suspicious deductions and registering complaints at the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (www.cybercrime.gov.in) or by dialling 1930.
In case of emergencies or cyber fraud, they advised calling or WhatsApping 8712665171.
