Rare Amoebic Infection Claims Another Life In Kerala; Toll Rises To Four

Caused by tainted water, Amoebic Meningoencephalitis is rare but deadly and has now claimed four lives in Kerala. But authorities remain optimistic that the Water is Life campaign will curb such waterborne diseases.

In another tragic turn of events, a man from Kerala's Kozhikode district lost his life yesterday, allegedly due to Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (AM), a rare and deadly infection caused by ingestion of tainted water. This takes the toll of this amoebic infection to four in the state, raising concerns among authorities and citizens alike.

The man, admitted to the Kozhikode Medical College Hospital, succumbed to the disease, which affects the brain and spinal cord, medical sources informed. This rare but lethal infection, which has also been blamed for the death of two other people in Kerala's Kozhikode district and one in Alappuzha, is feared to be spreading.

The state government has launched the Water is Life campaign to counter waterborne diseases statewide. Water samples from various areas are being tested as a matter of urgency.

"Amoebic Meningoencephalitis is a rare disease. Initial symptoms include headaches, fever, and nausea. It could lead to seizures and result in comas or death," said Dr. Jayasankar, Medical Registrar, Kerala Medical College.

Despite the alarming increase in cases, officials are hopeful that their comprehensive testing and public awareness initiatives will curb further outbreaks. Stay vigilant, Kerala advises.
