A businessman on a SpiceJet flight had a nasty surprise when he discovered metal shards in his can of soft drink. The incident, which occurred in mid-January, saw the victim hospitalized with mouth injuries. SpiceJet has denied any tampering with the can.
More details have now emerged about the shocking incident. The victim, Amit Gupta, had just landed in Delhi when he felt a sharp pain in his mouth. Rushing to his dentist, he discovered metal shards in his mouth. Gupta told media outlets that he had struggled to breathe after taking a sip of the drink.
SpiceJet has denied the presence of any foreign object in Gupta's throat, chest, and abdomen. They have offered to cover the cost of the drink and Gupta's plane ticket. Over the past few years, several alarming incidents have been reported involving allegedly tampered-with food and beverages on flights in India.
This includes a 2018 incident on a Delhi-bound IndiGo flight where a senior citizen discovered a syringe in a pillow cushion. That same year, a businessman found a dead cockroach in his meal on a SpiceJet flight.
Gupta has urged authorities to enhance security and screening measures to prevent such incidents from happening. It remains to be seen if investigations will determine the cause of the incident.
