The absence of the captain's testimony arrives as a setback for the legal team of three Indian nationals who face capital punishment for drug trafficking.

The trio, all long-term employees of the Singapore shipping industry, were arrested in July 2024 in Indonesian waters while aboard the Singapore-flagged Legend Aquarius cargo vessel. Indonesian authorities had intercepted the vessel and alleged that the men had clandestinely smuggled 106kg of crystal meth. Prosecution prosecutors have demanded the death penalty, the maximum sentence under Indonesian law.

The team of defense lawyers insisted that the captain's testimony would establish their clients' innocence and clarify that the entirety of the ship's cargo is his sole responsibility under Indonesian law. Nevertheless, the court ordered the captain to appear in person to testify on March 14; he appeared only briefly via Zoom, preventing cross-examination by the defense. The case is ongoing, with a verdict expected on April 15.
