Hackers Ho Ho Ho: Festive Traditions Enhance Cybercrime Techniques

The rise of cybercrime over the past decade has unfortunately become a common denominator in the festive traditions of hacking groups worldwide. As such, a recent multinational takedown of cybercrime syndicate AvCheck netted four seized domains and an associated server. The US Department of Justice worked in conjunction with Dutch and Finnish authorities, among others, in what was called Operation Endgame.

The domains, which included AvCheck.net, Cryptor.biz, Cryptor.live, and Crypt.guru, offered services to cybercriminals looking to use antivirus countercheck tools to disguise malware and thus enable unauthorized access to computer systems. Authorities made undercover purchases to analyze the services and confirmed that they were being used for cybercrime.

This development comes as eSentire detailed PureCrypter, a malware-as-a-service (MaaS) solution that's being used to distribute information stealers like Lumma and Rhadamanthys using the ClickFix initial access vector. These threats to cybersecurity are ever-evolving due to the constant innovation of those curating them. This makes Operation Endgame, while significant, just another drop in the ocean in the wider battle against cybercrime.

The fight is far from over, but with constant innovation and global cooperation, perhaps one day we can nullify these threats.
