Popular City App Hits a Snag: Users Need to Enable JavaScript

After updating its app last week, users of OneCityNow are unable to access some of its features, with many taking to social media to complain. It turns out that the new release relies on JavaScript, which is disabled by default on many browsers. This unexpected requirement has left users frustrated and feeling alienated from the app.

OneCityNow, which thousands of city residents use to pay bills, apply for parking permits, and engage in civic political discourse, released the new update last week, forcing the majority of users to dig into their browser settings to enable JavaScript. Those who didn't underwent a confusing and frustrating user experience, thinking the app itself was dysfunctional.

Many have accused the OneCityNow tech team of not being in touch with real-world digital consumer habits and of not properly beta-testing the update. As more and more people turn to the app to engage with their city government, this update requiring JavaScript could impact civic participation.

OneCityNow spokesperson Jennifer Chang says they're aware of the problem and actively working on a solution, hoping to have the app fully functional again as soon as possible.

"We want to assure residents that we are committed to making OneCityNow as user-friendly as possible. We understand how important accessibility is for civic engagement, and we're doing everything we can to rectify the situation," said Chang.

The city government is monitoring the situation and plans to provide further communication on the issue. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to reach out to the OneCityNow support line with any questions or concerns.
