Eurojust, the EU agency supporting criminal justice cooperation, recently witnessed a significant success in disrupting organized crime groups (OCGs) involved in drug trafficking. The recent operation, conducted across five European countries and supported by Eurojust and Europol, exemplifies the effectiveness of cross-border judicial cooperation in combating this prevalent and dangerous activity.
The well-orchestrated operation targeted an OCG trafficking cannabis and cocaine across various EU and non-EU countries. By collaborating with authorities from Italy, Belgium, Germany, Spain, and Ukraine, supported by Europol and Interpol, Eurojust's efforts led to the arrest of 13 suspects and the seizure of drugs, firearms, and cash.
Drug trafficking is a prevalent and severe security threat in Europe, impacting many lives and undermining the fabric of society. As per Europol's report on criminal networks, drug trafficking is implicated in half of all homicides in Europe.
Eurojust has noticed a shocking increase in cross-border drug trafficking cases, doubling from 2020 to over 2,462 cases in 2023. Judicial collaboration is essential to combat this threat, given that drug trafficking frequently spans across borders, challenging national jurisdictions.
The Italian authorities initiated the investigation into this particular drug trafficking network in December 2021. Their findings revealed a sophisticated operation spanning continents. To ensure justice for this large-scale operation, Italian authorities turned to Eurojust to facilitate investigations in other countries and conduct crucial house searches and seizures.
In a coordinated effort on July 2nd, authorities from the involved countries met at Eurojust's coordination centre, united with Europol and Interpol, to execute the operation. The systematic house searches uncovered drugs, electronic devices, and monetary assets.
This operation was financially supported by the ON Network, funded by the European Commission and led by the Italian Antimafia Directorate (DIA).
Let's work together to build a resilient society immune to drug trafficking and all forms of criminal enterprises that undermine our safety and well-being. Eurojust remains committed to supporting such cross-border efforts for justice and security in Europe.
