Telangana Witnessing Alarming 470% Surge in Drug Cases Since 2017

Telangana is grappling with a dramatic five-fold increase in Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) cases, escalating by over 470% since 2017, with 2024 marking an unprecedented high. Early figures for 2025 indicate relentless enforcement efforts are set to continue.

In 2017, the state recorded 381 NDPS cases, which surged to 2,181 by 2024. This alarming trend is mirrored in drug seizures, with marijuana remaining the predominant trafficked substance. While 7,423 kilograms were confiscated in 2017, seizures peaked at 38,572 kilograms in 2021, and a substantial 21,871 kilograms were still seized in 2024.

Arrests have also soared. Indian national arrests witnessed a six-fold rise from 826 in 2017 to 5,258 in 2024. Foreign national arrests also saw an increase, with 29 in 2017 and 18 in 2024. The momentum has carried into 2025, with 183 NDPS cases and 160 ganja-related cases already registered by January, accounting for a significant portion of the previous year's totals. Authorities had confiscated 561 kilograms of ganja and 43.3 kilograms of other drugs by January 2025 alone.

The Telangana Anti-Narcotics Bureau (TGANB) reported that in 2024, drugs valued at ₹210.49 crore were disposed of across 2,785 cases. By February 15, 2025, ₹47.52 crore worth of drugs from 1,036 cases had already been disposed, underscoring a continuous commitment to clearing seized contraband. Foreign national arrests show an early rise in 2025, with four Nepalese nationals apprehended by January, compared to 17 foreigners arrested throughout 2024 (nine from Nigeria being the highest). This highlights persistent vigilance by law enforcement.
