Chandigarh’s fight against drug abuse has gained momentum through the multi-pronged campaign “Nasha aur Hinsa Mukt – Mera Gaon Meri Shaan.” Over a six-month period, Panchkula authorities have made significant progress by combining law enforcement efforts with community outreach and rehabilitation.
As part of the initiative, 1,736 individuals struggling with drug addiction were identified and offered treatment and rehabilitation support. This humane approach underlines the administration’s recognition that addiction is a public health issue as much as a law enforcement concern. Alongside rehabilitation, authorities have maintained a strong crackdown on narcotics trafficking.
In the same six-month timeframe, law enforcement officials arrested 144 drug traffickers and registered 74 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The seizures included a wide range of illegal substances such as heroin, charas, opium, ganja, and various types of illicit pharmaceutical pills. These recoveries highlight the extent and variety of the drug problem in the region.
The success of the campaign lies in its holistic strategy—targeting the supply chain, offering support to those affected by addiction, and involving communities at the grassroots level. Awareness campaigns and village-level engagement have played a critical role in breaking the silence around substance abuse and encouraging citizens to report illegal activities.
By merging rehabilitation with rigorous enforcement, the “Nasha aur Hinsa Mukt” initiative sets a strong example for other regions battling similar issues. Panchkula’s model suggests that coordinated efforts between health services, police, and local communities can make a tangible difference in addressing both the causes and consequences of drug abuse.
