Srinagar, Jammu & Kashmir, June 23, 2025 – In a concerted effort to combat the persistent drug menace across Kashmir, the Jammu and Kashmir Police have reported significant headway this Saturday, with fresh arrests of drug peddlers, substantial narcotics seizures, and the supervised destruction of illicit drugs worth lakhs. These coordinated actions underscore the authorities' unwavering commitment to eradicating drug trafficking in the region.
In Awantipora, police successfully apprehended a drug peddler during a routine vehicle checking operation at Gadikhal Chersoo. The accused, identified as Abdul Rashid Khan, son of Gh Mohammad Khan and a resident of Poshwan, was intercepted while riding a scooty. A thorough search revealed 2.8 kilograms of a charas powder-like substance in his possession. The scooty used in the commission of the crime was also seized by the police. A formal case has been registered against Khan under FIR No. 71/2025 at Police Station Awantipora, and further investigation is actively underway to unearth the network's broader connections.
Meanwhile, in north Kashmir's Sopore, a crucial step was taken in managing seized narcotics. The District Drug Disposal Committee, led by SP Sopore Divya D (IPS) and DySP DAR Sopore, oversaw the destruction of a significant quantity of previously seized narcotic and psychotropic substances. The environmentally compliant incineration was carried out at an approved site in Lassipora Pulwama, strictly adhering to the rules outlined in the 2022 regulations and in compliance with specific orders issued by the Special Court (NDPS) Baramulla. This destruction process ensures that seized drugs are permanently removed from circulation, preventing their re-entry into the illicit market. These ongoing efforts reflect the multi-pronged strategy adopted by J&K Police to tackle both the supply and disposal aspects of the drug crisis.
