Telangana Ignites Student Spirit with Statewide Anti-Drug Week

Telangana recently commenced a dedicated "Student-Focused Anti-Drug Week," mobilizing school and college students across the state to join the fight against substance abuse. Spearheaded by the State’s Department of Education in collaboration with the Youth Services Board and local law enforcement, the week-long initiative is designed to raise awareness, foster resilience, and empower students to champion a drug-free lifestyle.

Launched from the Director's office in Hyderabad, the campaign features an array of student-centric activities both in classrooms and on community platforms. Students are participating in essay competitions, poster-making events, and interactive seminars where experts discuss the physical, mental, and social consequences of drug use. Workshops led by clinicians and educators teach critical decision-making skills and strategies for resisting peer pressure.

A highlight of the week is the "Peer Ambassador" program, where selected students pledge to be peer supporters in their schools. These ambassadors receive training in identifying early warning signs among classmates and guiding them toward available counseling and rehabilitation services.

Telangana Police are also playing a crucial role by conducting awareness sessions in schools and launching a specially designed hotline for students to report drug-related concerns anonymously. Additionally, the campaign includes visits from recovered individuals who share their personal stories, illustrating the journey from addiction to recovery and survival.

Principals and teachers have welcomed the initiative, noting that it not only informs students about the hazards of drugs but also strengthens life skills such as self-esteem, empathy, and community responsibility. The state government has confirmed plans to maintain this program annually, with hopes of expanding it further into rural areas.

By prioritizing youth engagement and peer-led support, Telangana’s Anti-Drug Week positions students at the forefront of a collective movement toward safeguarding their well-being and the welfare of future generations.
