Indian Ministery of External Affairs Sanjay Jaishankar has taken another swipe at Pakistan, criticizing the country for its alleged support of terrorism. Speaking at the United Nations (UN) headquarters in New York City, Jaishankar, who is on a three-day visit to the US, asserted that India would continue to highlight the importance of combating terrorism in all its forms.
Jaishankar was leading an Indian delegation at the UN to inaugurate an exhibition titled 'The Human Cost of Terrorism'. Described by officials as an "augmented reality experience", the exhibition showcases terrorism's wide-ranging impact on civilians.
The event, which runs from June 30 to July 11, is being held just a day before Pakistan takes over the Presidency of the UN Security Council for July. To this end, Jaishankar emphasized the need for comprehensive sanctions against all terrorists and their networks.
"It is time to stop seeing terrorism as a continuum. When terrorism is supported by a state, it represents a bigger challenge to all of us," he said. The exhibit aims to shed light on the "unrecognised" suffering of civilians, a large number of whom have been killed or displaced due to terrorism.
"There should be no distinction drawn between terrorist groups," Jaishankar added. "It is equally important to enforce the sanctions regime against all terrorists and their networks. And it is equally important to ensure that the UN listings are not watered down by arbitrary and selective interpretations of the sanctions regime."
The exhibition will be open to representatives from UN member states and agencies at the organisation's headquarters. Through augmented reality, the event aims to personalize the impact of terrorism on individuals, helping its attendees to understand the very real cost of terrorism that is often overlooked.
