According to reports, the Boeing 787 aircraft, which carried 151 passengers and 16 crew members, suddenly plummeted by almost 900 feet in the wee hours, just after takeoff. The incident, which triggered panic among the passengers, happened approximately 150 kilometers from the Indian capital.

The aircraft, which had been airborne for just over an hour, was cruising at 31,000 feet when it dropped to around 21,000 feet. Thankfully, the pilots rectified the error, and the plane climbed back to its assigned altitude.

Following the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) decided to ground both the pilots, as well as launch an investigation. "The flight AI142 from Delhi to Vienna involving Boeing 787 aircraft, which experienced an unexpected drop in altitude on Friday, is duly investigated by the DGCA," said a DGCA official.

Additionallly, an Air India spokesperson acknowledged the incident, assuring that the airline would cooperate with the DGCA investigation. "We will provide all necessary support as required by the DGCA. The safety of passengers and crew on board is of paramount importance to us at all times," the spokesperson added.

In the aftermath of this mid-air incident, the details of which are now coming to light, it remains to be seen what further actions the DGCA will take, not just regarding this particular flight but also to ensure that such a situation never recurs.
