Indian authorities concluded that a recent 700 kg drug seizure in Indian waters was the work of an organized crime group from Iran. The drugs, worth an estimated Rs 2,500-3,500 crore on the international market, were seized alongside the arrest of eight Iranian nationals off the Gujarat coast.
This recent operation, named 'Sagar Manthan-4,' was carried out jointly by the Narcotics Control Bureau, the Indian Navy, and the Gujarat Police Anti-Terrorist Squad. The Indian Navy played a key role in intercepting the suspicious vessel, with all eight men arrested claiming to be Iranian citizens but lacking proper identification documents. This collaboration demonstrates the effectiveness of India's anti-narcotics units and the seamlessness with which they can coordinate joint operations.
This successful interception is one of many by Indian authorities this year. In total, 3,500 kg of drugs have been seized in 2021, with the help of the Indian Navy, Anti-Terrorist Squad, and the Narcotics Control Bureau. These agencies have also made a total of 21 arrests, 14 of which are of Pakistani nationals and 11 of Iranian nationals, like in this most recent case.
The significance of these operational achievements is twofold. Not only do they show India's commitment to eradicating narcotics under the 'Nasha Mukt Bharat' initiative, but they also send a strong message to criminal groups that operate internationally that they will be caught and held accountable for their actions.
"This is the second major successful coordinated anti-narcotics operations at sea by the Navy this year," said a Navy spokesperson. The navy remains committed to ensuring a safe and secure maritime environment, free from the illegal trafficking of drugs and other illicit activities.
