AP to set up waste-to-energy plants in Nellore, Kakinada

The government of Andhra Pradesh will initiate the establishment of waste-to-energy plants in Nellore and Kakinada. The plants will process solid waste and provide energy from waste.

The state generates 6,890 metric tonnes of solid waste daily, with only 31% currently processed at existing waste-to-energy plants. By establishing these new plants, the government will be able to process over 50% of the daily waste. The minister, Ponguru Narayana, stated that they are exploring the possibility of establishing a third plant in the Kadapa-Anantapur-Kurnool region. The minister accused the previous government of ignoring the issue, leading to a legacy waste problem. He stated that the current government has already cleared 45 lakh metric tonnes of legacy waste and aims to clear the remaining by October 2, 2025.

The government intends to float tenders for setting up the new units at strategic locations between the mentioned cities. This initiative will not only help in waste management and clearing legacy waste but will also generate energy from waste.
