Bosch Raises Concerns Over Skipping BS V Emission Norms, Warns of Potential Vehicle Safety Risks

Bosch Ltd has raised concerns about the potential risks of skipping Bharat Stage (BS) V emission norms and moving directly to BS VI for vehicles. In a letter dated June 5, the company warned the Indian government that such a move could result in safety and quality issues, such as self-acceleration and engine damage. Bosch explained that transitioning from BS IV to BS V requires around four-and-a-half years of lead time for the design, application, and validation of new engine technologies, with a similar timeline needed for the shift to BS VI. The letter, sent after a meeting held by the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) on June 3, addressed the possibility of bypassing BS V in response to international pressure on India to reduce pollution. Bosch emphasized that without the proper development and validation phases, which include one year for design, one year for application, and two to two-and-a-half years for validation, the auto industry could face serious issues with vehicle performance. An industry expert noted that while there is little difference in fuel quality between BS V and BS VI, skipping BS V would require significant technology upgrades, with an estimated investment between ₹40,000 crore and ₹60,000 crore.
