The DMK in Puducherry staged a protest on June 12, 2023, against the centralised job recruitment process at the Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (Jipmer). The state's governing party claimed that the institute's recent hiring practices undermined the interests of Puducherry residents.
The demonstration, which consisted of dozens of DMK members and leaders, was held outside the institute's entrance, causing a brief traffic disruption in the area. Protesters asserted that the central government's authority over recruitment at Jipmer deprived locals of opportunities in the Union Territory.
According to the DMK, over 100 jobs have been given to outsiders in violation of the 70:30 ratio that favours locals. Moreover, they argue that the practice of reserving positions for specific categories based on the Central Educational Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Amendment Act of 2012 has unfairly excluded deserving candidates from Puducherry.
In a statement, the DMK spokesperson said the party will not tolerate such discrimination against the local population and demanded that the central government review the recruitment process to ensure equal opportunities for all.
As of now, the Central Government has not responded to the protest or the demands, but the DMK has vowed to continue to fight for transparency and equality in recruitment processes for locals within the state.
This demonstration is one of many political standoffs between centre and state, and locals and outsiders, highlighting the increasing tension over employment opportunities and access to resources, especially in healthcare, across India.
