Spanish Champions Barcelona Hand Captaincy Back To Marc-Andre Ter Stegen

Spanish champions Barcelona have handed the captain's armband back to German goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen, whose future at the club had been in serious doubt.

Ter Stegen, 29, took over as captain from the departed Lionel Messi last year. But his knee problems have limited his appearances for the Catalan club in recent seasons.

He refused to release his medical details, while Barca tried to classify him as a long-term injury. It was later reported that he had signed the necessary paperwork.

The German's future at the Camp Nou had been in serious doubt, with Barcelona keen to cut his salary from its current level of around 8m per year. But the outcome of recent talks between the club and the player's representatives has seen Ter Stegen agree to a reduced basic salary of 3m, with the rest made up in easily achievable bonuses. The new contract will keep him at Barcelona until 2025.

The news has been received with widespread approval from Barcelona fans, not only because of Ter Stegen's improved form this season but also because of the impact of his German counterpart Kevin Trapp. Since Trapp arrived on loan from Paris St-Germain last summer, he has been in superb form, making save after save to keep Barcelona in games they might well have lost without his prowess between the posts.

Now, with Ter Stegen back as captain, the future looks brighter for Barcelona, both domestically and in the Champions League.
