Zelenskyy Calls For De-Escalation, Warns Of 'Decisions Without Ukraine'

In a speech ahead of the summit, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the world faces a "serious crisis" and urged nations to work together toward peace rather than making "decisions without Ukraine."

Zelenskyy's speech came as President Biden and Russian President Vladimir Putin are set to meet in Switzerland tomorrow. In his speech, Zelenskyy emphasized the need for de-escalation of the crisis and a diplomatic solution that included Ukraine. He argued that Ukraine must be involved in any decision-making process as it faces a direct threat from Russia. This includes any potential peace agreements.

"The world is now facing one of the most serious crises caused by the Russian Federation," he said. "And I am convinced that only Ukraine can propose and decide on its own future, without resorting to outside interference."

He argued that Ukraine has earned the right to be at the table through its sacrifices in the face of Russia's invasion. He also emphasized that Ukraine's freedom is bound up with that of Europe and the rest of the world.

"The security crisis that unfolds today in Europe and unfolds tomorrow in the world is, indeed, a threat to everyone, and everyone should solve it together, not on the basis of bilateral agreements, but through cooperation of democratic societies, which, I am sure, will benefit from such cooperation," he said.

Zelenskyy's speech came on the heels of President Biden indicating that a potential peace agreement with Russia could include territorial exchanges. It remains to be seen how the Biden-Putin summit will address Zelenskyy's appeals.
