Ex-IND Captain On Why Ashwin May Leave CSK: 'It's Corporate Cricket, Giving Crores...'

Ravichandran Ashwin's return to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025 may be brief as he plans to leave after a tough season.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar believes that Ravichandran Ashwin may not stay on at Chennai Super Kings (CSK) if the franchise suffers another disappointing season in the upcoming IPL 2025.

Speaking to Times of India, Gavaskar argued that the negotiations between CSK and Ashwin, which led to the off-spinner's return to the team he previously captained, involved hefty sums of money, and Ashwin, quite rightly, may consider moving elsewhere if CSK's on-field fortunes don't improve.

"When he went back to Chennai Super Kings , it was a lot of money being exchanged for his services. So, if the CSK management is reading this, forget it if you give him one more poor season," Gavaskar said.

"It's corporate cricket, giving crores and taking. Who knows, next season, he might not be there with CSK and might be playing for some other franchise," he added.

Ashwin was dropped from the CSK squad towards the end of the IPL 2022 season, and the spinner admitted that he was "shocked" at being let go by the franchise.

But earlier this year, Ashwin was welcomed back into the CSK set-up, and he appeared thrilled at the opportunity to rejoin the team he played for between 2009 and 2015.

Gavaskar's comments come ahead of the upcoming IPL 2025 season, which gets underway in March.

CSK, led by MS Dhoni, will be hoping to improve on their disappointing seventh-place finish in the IPL 2024 season.

The three-time champions have undergone significant changes to their coaching staff ahead of the new season, replacing Stephen Fleming as head coach with Sri Lanka's Mahela Jayawardene.
