The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has decided to cancel its proposal to develop an eco-park on the reclaimed Perungudi dumping yard, responding to strong opposition from local residents and environmentalists. The project, which was estimated to cost ₹185 crore and aimed to convert 93 acres of the landfill into a recreational eco-park, encountered resistance due to its potential impact on the nearby Pallikaranai marshland, a critical ecological area.
Earlier this year, the GCC conducted a public hearing to present its detailed project report and gather community feedback. During this session, residents expressed their concerns, emphasizing the importance of preserving the reclaimed land as marshland after the completion of bio-mining to clear legacy waste. The Pallikaranai marshland, known for its rich biodiversity and ecological significance, has been under threat from urban development, making its conservation a priority for environmental groups and the community.
The withdrawal of the eco-park proposal highlights the civic body’s responsiveness to public concerns and the growing recognition of the need to protect natural ecosystems. While the eco-park was intended to provide green space for recreation, residents and activists argued that preserving the marshland in its natural state would serve as a more sustainable and ecologically beneficial approach. The GCC’s decision reflects a shift toward balancing development with environmental preservation, ensuring that local ecosystems are safeguarded for future generations.
