Breaking away from the usual combative stance of his party, DMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) has taken a novel approach to dealing with opposition criticism by invoking the memory of former Chief Minister and movie star MG Ramachandran, more commonly referred to as MGR.
In an apparent attempt to neutralize opposition attacks, EPS claimed that critics will disappear from politics just like opposition politicians who criticized MGR during his tenure, according to reports.
Speaking at a celebration of the 97th anniversary of MGR's birth in Tiruvannamalai, EPS said:
"Those who are opposed to the path of MGR and Amma (late J. Jayalalithaa) have no future. They will not exist in politics."
This is a clear reference to the fierce criticism that the DMK has been facing over its leadership and governance recently. The opposition, including the main opposition party, AIADMK, has been highly critical of the DMK's leadership and has often compared the current situation to the previous terms of MGR and former Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
By invoking MGR, EPS is attempting to equate himself and the DMK with the beloved former leader, creating a sort of defensive shield against opposition criticism.
It remains to be seen how effective this strategy will be and if it will translate into improved support for the DMK.
