Karnataka's Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy has slammed the BJP for attempting to take credit for the state's new metro line, set to open on August 10. In a recent interview, Reddy criticised BJP leaders, including Tejasvi Surya and B.Y. Vijayendra, for claiming that the Yellow Line was solely a Central government initiative. He highlighted that metros are built through collaboration with both the Centre and the respective state government, and that Karnataka has contributed much more to the project than what was mentioned by the BJP leaders.
Recently elected MP for Bengaluru South Tejasvi Surya, and State President B.Y. Vijayendra, have both made claims attempting to credit the central government for the Yellow Line metro, which largely runs through Bengaluru city. This comes at a time when the BJP is trying to make inroads in the state ruled by the opposition Congress party.
Transport Minister Reddy stated that the Centre provides assistance only for certain parts of metro construction such as civil work and rolling stock the latter being the mechanical components and systems that are needed to operate a metro. He criticised the BJP leaders for not understanding the nuances of metro construction and for trying to score political points ahead of the upcoming assembly elections in 2023.
This kerfuffle highlights the political interests at play in metro construction, as the BJP and Congress party attempt to garner credit for the metro project. The opening of the metro is set to provide much relief to Bengaluru's commuting populace, with hopes that it will alleviate traffic congestion on the city's roads.
