Waterlogged Delhi, Civic Services Attacked, as AAP and Delhi Govt. Trade Blame

Rainbow colours may be attractive but when drains are coloured the same way, it is a cause for concern. Delhi witnessed heavy rainfall on August 14, 2022, that led to waterlogging in several areas. This event, unfortunately, is not an isolated one and has been a recurring feature of Delhi for several years.

The Associated Press of Pakistan reported that Atishi, a top official from the opposition party, criticized the governing Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for failing to manage the capital's drains and sewage systems. This criticism was supported by several videos and pictures of inundated roads and uprooted trees. The chairperson of the Standing Committee on Urban Development of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, Raj Niwas Garg, stated that the problem of waterlogging occurs every year and the government is aware of it. He promised that the defects in the drainage system will be remedied.

Interestingly, the Minister of PWD of Delhi, Satyendra Jain, responded to this criticism by sharing clips of the waterlogged stretches in the period between 2013 and 2015 when the AAP was not in power. He highlighted the work done by the AAP government since coming to office.

The question here is, has the AAP government lived up to the expectations of the people? Or is this a case of 'pot calling the kettle black'? As the citizens of Delhi brace for more rainy days ahead, the question remains if the drains will be able to take the pressure of the next downpour.
