Ex-Delhi Cop Among 4 Held In Punjab Jewellery Heist, Learnt To Disguise Himself From YouTube Videos

It is not unusual for criminals to use disguises to evade detection, but for a former police officer to use his expertise and knowledge of police protocols against his former colleagues is surprising even for seasoned investigators. Despite this unique twist, the perpetrators were unprepared for the combined might of the Punjab and Delhi police, who successfully recovered a substantial haul of stolen goods and shut down a burgeoning network of unscrupulous individuals.

On Saturday, the Punjab police arrested four people in Amritsar, including a former Delhi Police officer, for their involvement in a jewellery store heist the previous day. The police recovered a substantial haul of stolen items, comprising 120 grams of gold, 500 grams of silver, and Rs 8 lakh in cash from the suspects.

The former officer, Akash Bhalerao, had purportedly retired from the Delhi Police force in 2020 and subsequently joined a private security agency. However, he and his accomplices, Arif Habib, Vikram Singh, and Sanket Patel, had hatched a plan to rob jewellery stores across Punjab and nearby states. Using his knowledge of the police, Bhalerao taught his partners how to identify and exploit vulnerabilities in police procedures and security. Their ingenious disguise consisted of posing as police officers, complete with fake ID cards and a modified van, which allowed them to seamlessly intercept and flee with their loot.

Their heists initially went off without a hitch, allowing them to steal upwards of Rs. 10 lakh in goods. However, their luck ran out on Friday when they were intercepted by the Amritsar police while attempting to make off with their spoils. A chase ensued, culminating in the criminals' arrest and the recovery of the stolen jewellery.

This case illustrates the resilience and dedication of law enforcement in bringing criminals, even former colleagues, to justice. As stated by the Commissioner of Police of Amritsar, Mr. Rachpal Singh, such crimes will not be tolerated, and all efforts will be made to bring the culprits to justice.

It remains to be seen how the remaining co-conspirators will be brought to justice, but with the recovered jewellery and cash, the evidence is stacked against them.

Let this be a reminder to would-be criminals that no matter how much you prepare, you can never outsmart the law.

Stay safe, folks!
