Khammam district has received a boost with the Telangana Deputy Chief Minister, Kadiam Srihari, laying the foundation stone for the 600-crore Jawahar Lift Irrigation Scheme. However, he warned the Andhra Pradesh government that continued daily diversion of water from the upper Srisailam reservoir via the Pothireddypadu lift system could result in severe losses for farmers in Telangana's Nalgonda and Khammam districts.
The Jawahar Lift Irrigation Scheme is expected to provide assured water supply for irrigation and drinking purposes to about 84,000 acres in Khammam and Deverakonda blocks of the district.
In a warning to the Andhra Pradesh government, Srihari emphasized the need to acknowledge the rights of Telangana states and to stop the illegal and unjustifiable water exploitation, which would drain the project in just 25 days. He stated that the AP government's reckless actions would have severe losses for Telangana farmers, affecting approximately 30,000 acres of irrigated farmland in Nalgonda and Khammam districts.
The lift scheme, when completed, will provide water from the Pulichintala reservoir through a 11.15-km-long pipeline with a gamut of amenities such as a powerhouse, pump house, and discharge chamber.
This is a developing story and will be updated as new information arises.
