Robert Vadra Received Rs 58 Cr Proceeds Of Crime In Tainted Gurugram Land Deal, ED Tells Court

Robert Vadra, the businessman and brother-in-law of Rahul Gandhi, may soon face trial for allegedly receiving proceeds of crime worth Rs 58.62 crore in a tainted land deal in Gurugram.

A special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) court has issued a notice to Vadra, scheduling a hearing on August 28 to determine whether to take cognisance of the complaint and charge him for offences under the PMLA.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has alleged that Vadra was aware that the 5.19-crore payment for the trademark he had transferred to a company controlled by businessman Nanda Kumar was indirectly from Sudipto Sen, a suspected hawala operator.

Sen had allegedly bought 3.5 acres of land in Gurugram for 8.5 crore when the actual price was 35 crore, according to the ED. The land was then transferred to the company of Vadra's associate, Mahesh Bharti.

The agency had said that during this period, Vadra, Kumar, and Bharti had "entered into a criminal conspiracy and a tainted and fraudulent transaction of sale/purchase of the immovable property".

The agency charged that the three had used the proceeds of crime to execute the transaction and Vadra had "knowingly and actively participated in the scheduled offence".

The ED had attached the said property located at Sector 53, Gurugram, worth 22.27 crore in February last year under the PMLA.

It had alleged that the main beneficiary was Vadra, who had cheated the sellers of the land by not disclosing the actual buyer.
