PM Modi encourages women's empowerment in public transport

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday urged more women to become pilots, conductors, and engineers in the metro sector, highlighting the importance of women in shaping the country's progress.

PM Modi tweeted after flagging off Bengaluru's Yellow Line metro service, operated by a all-women crew, which included a woman loco pilot and conductor.

This is significant: the Bengaluru metro is the first in the country to have a woman loco pilot.

During the journey, the prime minister interacted with students onboard and posed for pictures.

Children aboard the metro with PM Modi today are from the nearby Government Higher Primary School, who had an unexpected day off from classes.

The Yellow Line, or the Silk BoardK.R. Puram Line, spans 13 stations and is expected to ease traffic along the bustling IT corridor.

"This new line will enhance the lives of thousands of people travelling to and from work, but also those who travel to enjoy the rich culture of Bengaluru," PM Modi said at the launch.

He added that the project, which was initially termed "politically difficult" and faced " infrastructural challenges", will improve the lives of locals and boost the local economy.

The prime minister acknowledged that metro services across the country have helped people during the pandemic, especially key workers such as doctors, nurses, and paramedics.

He praised the Bengaluru metro, which has provided uninterrupted services during the lockdown and equipped buses and trains with ultra-violet cabinets and sanitization facilities to prevent the spread of infections.

"Today's achievement belongs to the people of Bengaluru. Congratulations to each and every citizen of Bengaluru, and Karnataka," he added.
