Ladies and gentlemen, pencils down... er, rather, books closed!
If you thought the days of memorizing textbooks and regurgitating facts were endless, rejoice! The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is introducing open-book assessments for Class 9 from the 2026-27 session, according to a statement released on Thursday. This is in line with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023 and the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, both of which call for a shift away from rote learning and towards competency-based learning.
Students will be encouraged to use their textbooks and creativity to apply their knowledge going forward. Competency-based education focuses on helping students develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills, as well as fostering creativity and analytical thinking.
While open-book assessments will not eliminate assessments or exams entirely, they will provide a shift in perspective that focuses on the application of knowledge and not just its retention.
