Airtel's Free AI Offer With Perplexity Faces Downgrade Charges

Airtel has faced criticism and legal challenges over its free AI offer following customer confusion about the offer's terms and conditions.

Recently, Airtel offered its customers a free AI offer which included features worth Rs 17,000 from the Perplexity Pro version. As part of the offer, Airtel upgraded customers to the Perplexity Care version for free for the first year, and the Perplexity Pro version for the remaining part of the year. However, several customers have taken to social media to clarify the offer terms and conditions, with some even lodging complaints against Airtel alleging unfair practices.

In a recent development, the New Delhi Consumer Commission has issued a notice to Airtel demanding a justification for the recent offer and asked why action should not be taken against the company for allegedly violating the Consumer Protection Act. The commission received a complaint from a customer who argued that the offer was misleading and subjected consumers to an unwanted automatic renewal of subscriptions.

In response to the growing backlash, an Airtel spokesperson issued the following statement:

We are proactive in our efforts to create a culture of trust with our customers, and firmly believe in engaging with them through transparent and ethical practices only. We have always endeavored to offer the best service experience to our customers, and firmly believe that any existing or potential customer partnership flourishes on trust and transparency. We have always been transparent and upfront in all our communications, ensuring customers are aware of offer details, and clearly specify the renewal terms in plain language.

The spokesperson's statement attempts to affirm Airtel's commitment to transparent practices and customer trust, but the growing number of complaints and legal challenges underscore the ongoing customer perplexity and frustration with the offer's terms and conditions.
