'Fight for Constitution,' says Opposition Leader as MPs Detained

Police detained MPs from the opposition Congress party as they staged a protest in Parliament House today. The opposition party has been vocal in their opposition to the government's decision to pass an executive order to conduct national census before the next general election.

Speaking to the media outside Parliament House, Congress Party Leader Rahul Gandhi urged citizens to "fight for one man, one vote, and the Constitution." He criticized the government's misuse of executive powers to potentially skew the upcoming census for political gains. "The Prime Minister's executive order aims to divide people based on religion and caste."

Earlier this week, the opposition filed a petition to the Supreme Court to challenge the government's executive order. Legal experts have dubbed the order, implemented through a National Population Policy, as being in violation of the Constitution.

As MPs were taken into police vans, Congress Party officials shouted from the balcony of Parliament House, "We will fight for the Constitution!"

The government has not yet commented on the detention of the opposition MPs.

Rahul Gandhi concluded the press conference by saying, "The people of India must unite and fight this evil politically motivated order that threatens to destabilize our great nation."
