Srikalahasti assembly to witness keen contest between the YSRCP-TDP

TIRUPATI: The Srikalahasti assembly constituency in Tirupati district is set to witness a closely contested battle between the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) and the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in the upcoming general elections.

This prominent constituency, home to the globally renowned Lord Shiva temple known as Dakshina Kashi, was a TDP bastion for nearly 25 years. Former minister and senior TDP leader Bojjala Gopala Krishna Reddy secured consecutive victories in 1989, 1994, 1999, 2009, and 2014.

After Bojjala's demise, his son, Bojjala Sudheer Reddy, entered politics to uphold his father's legacy but was defeated by YSRCP’s Biyyapu Madhusudan Reddy in the 2019 general elections. The 2019 polls saw a quadrangular contest, with Madhusudan Reddy receiving 1,09,541 votes, Sudheer Reddy securing 71,400 votes, Jana Sena candidate Vinutha Nagaram garnering 5,274 votes, and BJP’s Kola Anand obtaining 4,004 votes.

In the 2024 elections, the scenario appears different due to the TDP-Jana Sena alliance and reports of their possible collaboration with the BJP. Bojjala Sudheer Reddy remains optimistic about achieving his first electoral win against YSRCP’s sitting MLA, Biyyapu Madhusudan Reddy.

Meanwhile, Madhusudan Reddy is confident of securing re-election, citing his developmental initiatives over the past five years and his extensive public outreach, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking to TOI, Madhusudan Reddy remarked, "The state government’s schemes have significantly benefited people below the poverty line. Under the leadership of Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, the YSRCP government has fulfilled 99% of its promises. I am confident these factors will help me retain the constituency in the upcoming elections.
