Firefighters Battle Overnight Gorse Fire At Arthurs Seat In Edinburgh

A major gorse fire that spread across a landmark hill in Edinburgh gave firefighters a rough night, but their swift response prevented the fire from spreading beyond control.

The fire started on Landfill Road, next to Holyrood Park, and spread to Arthur's Seat, a peak in the city, where it was brought under control after midnight. Local residents were evacuated to ensure their safety and that of the firefighters. One resident present at the scene spoke of not being able to return to her home at this time.

Rachel Clouston added: "I'm lucky enough to live just across the road from the fire and have spent the evening watching the incredible efforts of the emergency services tackling it. I am incredibly grateful for their swift and brave response, knowing that my home is currently in the midst of this crisis.

The fire service was alerted to the fire at 9:10 p.m. According to Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, they immediately dispatched multiple engines and firefighters to the scene, where they worked tirelessly to contain the flames. "At 10:30 p.m., we had six appliances at the scene, and we've had to call in additional appliances from across the region to help us," said a spokesperson for the Fire and Rescue Service.

By midnight, the fire had been contained, and efforts were underway to dampen the smoldering gorse. A significant number of resources were needed to contain the fire. This is one of many fires over the past few weeks. The dry, hot weather has increased the risk of wildfires in Scotland, encouraging residents to remain vigilant.

The fire service appealed to members of the public to avoid the area and allow crews to safely continue their work. They also urged residents to be cautious of the ongoing risk of wildfires in the area and to report any suspicious activity promptly.

In conclusion, the collaborative efforts of firefighters and swift action prevented the fire from spreading out of control. Their efforts paid off, although they inconvenienced residents and disrupted their lives temporarily. As the weather continues to be dry, the community will be hoping that this is the last fire they have to face for a long time.
