Dramatic visuals as Rahul Gandhi tends to fainted TMC MPs during protest

A day that began with Indian Opposition parties marching in protest to the Election Commission (EC) in Delhi ended with Congress MP Rahul Gandhi offering assistance to the fainted Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs Mahua Moitra and Mitali Baugh. The opposition is protesting against the EC's handling of electoral rolls and violations of Model Code of Conduct (MCC).

In remarkable images, Gandhi is seen helping the two women, who appeared wobbly on their feet, as they recover following their fainting spell during the protest. The protest march concluded with a symbolic fasting for the polls body's "failure to curb bias and misuse of power".

This came after EC on Saturday deferred the first phase of voting in Punjab by a week, announcing that voting for all the other phases will take place as scheduled. Punjab's Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and Congress leader Rahul Gandhi welcomed the EC's decision and termed it as a "big victory for democracy".

The deferment came a day after Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM), an umbrella body of farmer unions, urged people to boycott the elections as a protest against the alleged failure of the EC to ensure free and fair elections in the state.

EC cited the security concerns and protests by farmer groups for the delay in polling.

"After considering all the factors, the Commission has decided to defer the elections to 117-Phagwara Assembly constituency to April 20, 2022," said a statement issued by the EC.

The voting for Phase 1 of the elections in Punjab will now take place on February 14. Meanwhile, polling for the 17th Punjab Assembly elections will be held on February 20, February 21, February 23, February 24, and February 27.

The counting of votes will take place on March 10.
