7 Dead After Pick-Up Van Veers Off Road In Pune; PM Modi, CM Fadnavis Announce Ex Gratia

A tragic incident occurred late in the evening of Tuesday, 27th July, in Pune, Maharashtra, when a pick-up van carrying approximately two dozen people veered off the road and crashed into a tree. The vehicle was said to be racing with another van, carrying pilgrims from the same group, returning from a temple visit, when the accident occurred.

The impact of the crash killed seven people instantly, and several more were injured, with three in critical condition. After this horrific accident, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, and Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Devendra Fadnavis, expressed their grief and announced an ex gratia of 500,000 Indian Rupees ($6,741 USD) for the victims' families.

This heartbreaking news has shed light on unsafe road practices in India, where vehicular accidents are a leading cause of death.

Considering the grieving families and those impacted, one can only hope that such a tragic accident will open the eyes of the government, to realise the need for safer roads and more stringent driving regulations.

In the meantime, PM Modi and CM Fadnavis have ordered further investigation into the cause of the accident.
