Indian cricket legend Dilip Vengsarkar has criticised Matthew Hayden for his comments on Gautam Gambhir's confrontation with Oval pitch curator Lee Fortis.
Speaking to Times of India, the former India captain, said Hayden's criticism of Gambhir was 'disappointing', and he wondered if the Australian would have said the same things if the situation was reversed and an Indian had criticised an Australian groundsman.
"I went through the whole episode and it was disappointing to see Matthew Hayden criticising Gautam Gambhir so openly. If this happened the other way around, with an Indian commenting on an Australian groundsman, it would not have been accepted by the Australians, let alone the Indian fans," he said.
Vengsarkar argued that Gambhir's actions were motivated by passion for his country and cricket, and were not meant to be offensive.
"I believe Gambhir's intentions were not wrong. He is a passionate Indian cricketer who loves the game and has always given his best for the country. I am sure he would not say or do anything to hurt the game," he said.
"Also, I feel Hayden's comments were an insult to cricketers like Brett Lee, who also expressed his disappointment over the pitch. It's unfortunate that someone of Hayden's stature made such harsh comments against Gambhir without understanding the psychology of cricketers," he added.
The former India batsman also urged cricket administrators to address the issue of pitch tampering earlier in the game, to avoid such situations.
"I think administrators need to look at this issue of pitch tampering before the start of a game. If there is something wrong with the pitch, it should be addressed in the dressing room or at most, to the umpires. I hope this issue doesn't escalate any further," Vengsarkar said.
Conclusion:
This latest development shows that the ongoing controversy around thePitchgate continues to simmer, with the latest criticism coming from a former Indian legend, highlighting the perceived double standards of the Australian criticism of the pitch, and the alleged hostility directed at Indian players. The Pitchgate has sparked a lot of debate and controversy, and it will be interesting to see if the ongoing investigation, and Vengsarkar's comments will lead to further repercussions.
