Racism and free speech in Canada: Indian couple harassed by men yelling 'immigrant' slurs

Recently an Indian couple in Peterborough, Ontario were harassed by a group of Canadian men, who yelled racial slurs at them in a mall parking lot and used obscene gestures. This event sparks concern over the presence of racism and allowance of hateful speech in Canada.

In a video taken by the Indian couple, Mr. and Mrs. Patel, they can be seen approaching a car where four young Canadian men are sitting. The Patels asked them to turn down their loud music, to which one of the men yelled back, "Why don't you go back to your country?" The Patels then proceeded to record the incident, in which one of the Canadian men could be heard shouting "immigrant" and making an obscene gesture.

The incident has sparked anger and concern over racial discrimination in Ontario, with many speaking out against the behavior of the men in the video. Local police have since begun an investigation into the incident, and the Mall management has also issued an official statement condemning the actions of the individuals and ensuring the Patels of their support.

The issue sheds light on a larger problem of targeted racism, not only in Ontario but in Canada and encourages important discussions on the topic.

"We have become a dumping ground for the entire world. These people come from countries that don't have anything, and they're not willing to work. They're on welfare, and they're taking away from hard-working Canadians," said one of the men in the video.

This is not the first incident of racism targeted at South Asian Canadians, and sadly it may not be the last.
